In past, astronomy was solely concerned with the examination and classification of the physical processes in the sky whilst another related field the astrophysics was concerned with the explanation of these physical processes in term of physical laws. Currently, these two fields have merged and an astronomer can also be termed as an astrophysicist he or she usually has a PhD in astronomy and physics. Although, the fundamental jobs of astronomers are normally concerned with researching the sky but they are often involved in building instruments, teaching, or helping in an operation pertaining to observatory purposes.
